What Families of New First Graders Should Check First

When comparing after-school programs, look beyond the atmosphere of the facility. Consider whether your family can comfortably maintain the routine after April: the trip from school, operating hours, your child’s daily load, and the total monthly cost. The following six points make comparisons easier.

1. Getting here after school

Check the route from school, whether pickup support is needed, and what the trip will be like on rainy days.

2. Hours of care

Make sure pickup is possible by closing time, including during school holidays and special school schedules.

3. Adjusting to a new routine

School and after-school care begin at the same time. Look for places to rest and adults a child can ask for help.

4. The flow of the afternoon

Consider the order of homework, play and lessons, and whether it is sustainable for your child.

5. Total monthly cost

Compare the base fee together with snacks, management fees, extended care, school pickup and materials.

6. Safety and communication

Confirm procedures for absences, schedule changes, emergencies, insurance and disaster response.

Practise the route before school begins

If your child will travel from school to Craftsman independently, we recommend walking the actual route together before enrollment. Check traffic lights, crossings, busy streets, the rainy-day route, and what your child should do if they become unsure of the way.

School pickup option

Our current fee is ¥3,300 per month for registration plus ¥880 per pickup, including tax. The registration fee is waived for the first month. Pickup is currently available from Yamada, Kitayamada, Higashiyamata and Minamiyamata elementary schools, subject to the day and available capacity.

You do not need to have every weekday and lesson decided yet. Before your visit, it is enough to identify the number of days you may need, the school from which pickup may be required, and the latest time a guardian can collect your child.

A Typical Research Timeline

This is a general guide for families entering Grade 1. Application dates and selection methods differ by municipality and provider. If you are also considering Yokohama City’s Kids Clubs or after-school childcare clubs, please check the City’s latest official information.

About Craftsman After School

Craftsman is a private after-school program beside Kitayamata Station in Tsuzuki-ku, Yokohama. We support homework and incorporate activities such as brush calligraphy, abacus, English, Iroiku color education and inquiry-based learning into the after-school day. We also use five 3D printers in selected STEAM and Digital Craft activities, giving children opportunities to move from an idea and design to a physical object.

How to Compare After-School Programs

  • Compare total cost: include snacks, management fees, extended care, pickup and materials—not only the base fee.
  • Check what programs are included: the number of included sessions may differ by plan, and some options are charged separately.
  • Confirm weekday capacity: ask whether your required days are available.
  • Check the journey: compare the route from school, station access and pickup conditions.
  • Meet the people: ask about staffing, training and specialist instructors.
